When one leg appears longer than the other it is medically referred to as Limb Length Discrepancy or Short Leg Syndrome. The discrepancy may occur in the femur, tibia or both. This is either congenital in nature or is acquired through injury. SYMPTOMS · Fatigue · ankle/foot pain · nerve inflammation in the lower back and leg · Poor balance when walking and running. · Knee pain in both the short and long legs. CAUSES · Congenital causes can include the position of the developing fetus. · Birth injuries such as a dislocated hip sustained during delivery. · Injuries to the growth plates in the leg during childhood. · Injuries in adults, involving fractures or dislocations of the lower limb, even if properly treated. · Surgery on the hip or knee may cause the leg to shrink. · Poor posture, where the pelvis is tilted so that one side is higher than the other, thus making the leg on the high side of the pelvis work as if it was shorter than the other leg. CHIROPRACTIC CARE: If your problem cannot be helped by gentler natural means thru chiropractic management, then other measures such as surgery will be discussed and you will be referred. In any situation, your chiropractor is probably the best person to call on first if you suspect your problem to be one involving a difference in the length of your legs. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is caused by a pinched nerve in your wrist. The injury causes pain and numbness in the index and middle fingers and weakness of the thumb. Carpal tunnel receives its name from the eight bones in the wrist, called carpals, which form a "tunnel" through which the nerve leading to the hand extends.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which there is excessive pressure on the median nerve. This is the nerve in the wrist that allows feeling and movement to parts of the hand. SYMPTOMS: CTS normally start gradually with numbness or tingling in your thumb, index and middle fingers that comes and goes that will bring discomfort in your hand and wrist. Common carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms include: Tingling or numbness. You may experience tingling and numbness in your hand or fingers, especially your thumb and index, middle or ring fingers, but not your little finger. This sensation often occurs while holding a phone, a steering wheel, or, commonly, waking you from sleeping. The sensation may extend from your wrist up your arm. Many people "shake out" their hands to try to relieve their symptoms. As the disorder progresses, the numb feeling may become constant. Weakness. Median nerve is the responsible for controlling the thumb’s pinching muscles so, you may experience weakness in your hand and a tendency to drop objects. WHO'S MOST AT RISK? People working using a computer keyboard on frequently and those who are using small hand tools in manufacturing are at highest risk. Women are three times more likely than men to develop CTS, because the carpal tunnel itself may be smaller in women than in men. High alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine intake are other contributing risk factors. TREATMENTS: Carpal tunnel release surgery Carpal tunnel release is a surgical procedure that cuts into the ligament that is pressing on the nerve. Surgery for CTS is known as carpal tunnel decompression or carpal tunnel release surgery and is performed on an outpatient basis, which means you will not have to stay in hospital overnight. If the condition is diagnosed early, nonsurgical methods may help improve carpal tunnel syndrome. Methods may include: Wrist splints A wrist splint is worn to support the wrist and keep it in a neutral position. It should not apply direct pressure over the carpal tunnel. Wearing a splint at night and if this does not help, you may need to wear the splint during the day as well. Medications Medications used in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Corticosteroid injections, given into the carpal tunnel area, may relieve symptoms for a period of time. This is through low force, quick movements and precise actions. This adjustment uses what is called Torque Release Technique to successfully adjust the nervous system’s tone. This technique will correct the subluxations in the spine and provides relief to those who feel tense and tight. This adjustment uses less force than any other chiropractic adjustments.
